Emer Cooke nominated as new EMA Executive Director
Emer Cooke has been named Executive Director of the European Medicines Agency (EMA). She was currently at the WHO, where she held the position of Director of the Regulation and Prequalification Department. During an extraordinary session of the Board past June 25th, Ms Cooke has been selected from a list of candidates created by the European Commission.
Ms Cooke, Irish national, has 30 years’ experience in international regulatory affairs, 18 years of which were in leadership roles. She worked for the pharmaceutical unit of the European Commission from 1998 to 2002 and at EMA between 2002 and 2016, where she held positions including Head of Inspections and Head of International Affairs.
She will precede current Executive Director Guido Rasi on July 13rd 2020, date on which she has been invited to give a statement to the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). She is the fourth Executive Director in EMA’s history, and the first woman to lead the regulatory agency since it was formed 25 years ago.
